Don’t Doubt Yourself

Recently, I took a few items to the bank to be deposited and when the teller added everything up, and it matched what I had written on the deposit slip, I said, “Oh that’s great! You know, sometimes I’m not sure if I’ve added those up correctly.”

And she stopped what she was doing, and looked up at me, and with great earnestness she said, “Don’t doubt yourself.”

That message hit home, not just because of the way that she said it, but because in other ways, I needed to hear it at that moment.

And I left the bank thinking about that encounter. I also began to think about how important confidence is and how self-doubt erodes that confidence, and it made me wonder, how many times in life we need a certain kind of message or reinforcement, and we might not be expecting it. It might come from a source that we weren’t anticipating, but that doesn’t mean that that message isn’t right on time as well.
