How to Slice a Bagel

When you buy bagels at a store where they pre-sliced them, they’re often cut through the center of the bagel, and a lot of people cut them that way at home as well.

That means if somebody takes the top half, which often has toppings on it, like sesame seeds or poppy seeds, what’s left is sort of the plain bottom of the bagel.

I noticed when I was growing up my father would cut them through the center a different way, leaving a different kind of half. I asked him why and he said because if I cut it that way then each person gets a little bit of both, that nice topping and the bottom half of the bagel.

It occurred to me that in life when we have the opportunity to share something with someone else that includes a bit of the goodness of all of it, that that is so much better than leaving them with just the bottom half of a bagel, which is plain. I hope if you have the opportunity to share something with someone, that you consider that same method of how to share it in a way that they get the best of both.
