You Can Go Home Again
May 13, 2026A wise friend of mine recently used a classic phrase to explain why showing up in person really matters: “Must be present to win.”
That familiar line from raffle tickets has surprising relevance in our day-to-day lives—especially in how we show up for others. When I thought more about it, I realized there are at least three ways we “win” by choosing to be physically present:
1. It shows people they matter.
Your presence sends a message that no email, text, or video call can match. When you make the effort to show up, it communicates care, value, and priority—whether you’re meeting a friend, attending a colleague’s event, or showing up for a team.
2. The brain processes it more deeply.
Our brains are wired to engage more richly with in-person interaction. Facial expressions, tone, energy, and subtle body language all land more fully when experienced face-to-face. This depth makes your interactions more memorable and emotionally resonant.
3. It creates space for spontaneous moments.
There’s something magical about what can happen when you’re in the same space. Shared laughs over a passing comment, the spark of an unplanned conversation, or the surprise of someone else joining in—these are moments screens simply can’t replicate.
When you choose to be present in real life, you don’t just check a box—you open the door to deeper relationships, richer experiences, and real connection.
How Leaders Can Apply This Idea for Greater Impact:
- Make your presence intentional. Attend key meetings, town halls, or one-on-ones in person when possible. Presence communicates investment in your people.
- Use face-to-face time for feedback and recognition. Deliver praise or developmental input in person whenever you can—it lands more effectively and builds trust.
- Encourage in-person collaboration. Create regular opportunities for your team to be together physically, even if you’re hybrid or remote—shared space sparks innovation and strengthens team culture.
