In surfing culture, there’s a powerful tradition known as the paddle out. When someone in the community passes away, surfers paddle out to a familiar spot in the ocean, forming a circle to honor their friend. It’s a quiet, solemn, and beautiful ritual—one I’ve had the privilege to witness.
It’s also a reminder of something timeless: when we’re grieving, being together matters. Sharing stories, memories, even silence in the presence of others—these acts lighten the weight of sorrow. They connect us.
You don’t have to be part of surfing culture to understand the value of ritual. Gathering with others in a purposeful way to mark a loss or milestone helps elevate the moment and deepen its meaning.
We don’t always associate rituals with leadership—but maybe we should. As leaders, we’re often expected to keep things moving. But taking time to pause, reflect, and gather can be a powerful part of building trust, culture, and resilience in our teams.
Here are some ways to apply these thoughts as a leader:
- Create Space for Reflection: After a major project, milestone, or loss, intentionally pause with your team to acknowledge the moment—before rushing to the next thing.
- Honor Departures with Intention: When someone leaves your team or organization, lead a ritual (even a small one) to celebrate their contributions and say goodbye well.
- Model Emotional Presence: Let your team see that honoring emotions—joy, grief, gratitude—is part of effective leadership, not a distraction from it.
