Say You’re Sorry
September 30, 2026One of my favorite phrases in life comes from the world of comedy: timing is everything. The pacing of a joke or the pause before a punchline can completely change its impact. And the same is true in life and leadership.
There have been times when I’ve needed to talk to someone, and the people who reached out—sometimes without even knowing what I was going through—made all the difference. I’ve felt immense gratitude for their presence and timing.
It also made me wonder how often I try to show up for others, and whether my timing feels helpful or intrusive. As leaders, mentors, or friends, we often act from a place of wanting to be useful—but sometimes what we offer might not match what others need in that moment.
I’ve come to see that there are two simple but powerful practices in this dynamic:
- When someone shows up for you at the right time, thank them. Acknowledge not just their help, but the thoughtfulness of when they reached out.
- When you show up for others, check your timing. A simple “Is this a good time?” gives them the space to say yes or no, and it shows respect for their needs and boundaries.
Timing can’t always be perfect, but awareness and care go a long way toward making your support more meaningful.
Three ways leaders can apply this principle to be more effective:
- Pause before jumping in. When you see a team member struggling, check in first—ask if they want input or just space to process. The right help at the right time builds trust.
- Express timely gratitude. Recognize others not just for results, but for when they step up—especially during challenging or high-pressure moments.
- Model mindful responsiveness. Show your team what thoughtful timing looks like by managing your own impulses to react immediately. Pausing, then responding intentionally, creates steadier and more effective leadership.
In comedy, great timing makes people laugh. In leadership, great timing helps people grow. Both come down to paying attention—to others, to the moment, and to what’s truly needed right now.
