Moving Forward
October 14, 2026A sales leader recently told me that his primary goal was to make sure his sales reps were happy. When I asked him why, he didn’t hesitate: “Because happy people sell more.”
That comment stuck with me. It pushed me to think about how often we wait for something good to happen in order to feel happy. We tell ourselves, “I’ll be happy when the deal closes… when the project is over… when things calm down.”
But what he pointed out flips that idea on its head.
When we’re already in a happy or positive mindset, good things tend to flow more easily. It’s not magic — it’s mindset. Happiness changes our posture, how we talk to people, how we solve problems, and how we show up.
I’ve noticed this in my own life. If I start the day intentionally focusing on what I’m grateful for, the whole day shifts. I’m more open, more patient, and more likely to notice opportunities I would have missed. And often, some genuinely remarkable things emerge from that energy.
If you’re feeling off track or need a reset, it may be worth experimenting with this idea. Begin the day with a happy frame of mind and see what follows.
Here are three simple ways leaders can apply this mindset to be more effective and efficient:
- Start the day with a 60-second gratitude scan. Quickly name three things you’re grateful for. It resets your mindset and improves your emotional footing for the day’s decisions.
- Adopt a “positive first response.” When challenges appear, pause and respond from a calm, positive posture rather than urgency or frustration. You’ll solve problems faster and with less friction.
- Model emotional tone for your team. Happiness is contagious. Leaders who show up with optimism and steadiness create an environment where people think more clearly and perform better.
